Dr. Tomike Olawande

A Life Dedicated to Mental Health

Dr. Tomike Olawande is a psychiatrist, mental health advocate, researcher, and educator whose work spans clinical practice, community outreach, and international advocacy. With over a decade of experience at the intersection of mental health and social justice, Dr. Olawande has become one of the leading voices calling for culturally sensitive, accessible, and equitable mental health care across Africa and the diaspora.

Born in Nigeria and trained across multiple institutions, Dr. Olawande brings a deeply personal and professional understanding of the barriers that prevent people — especially in African and migrant communities — from accessing mental health support. Her work is driven by a conviction that no one should suffer in silence due to stigma, lack of awareness, or systemic inequality.

"The conversation around mental health in Africa is changing. But change requires courage — the courage to speak, the courage to listen, and the courage to act. That is what we are here to do."

Evidence-Based Advocacy

Dr. Olawande's research focuses on the intersection of mental health, migration, and identity — areas that are critically underrepresented in mainstream psychiatric literature. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences, contributing to a growing body of evidence on the mental health needs of displaced and migrant populations.

Migration & Mental Health Psychological impact of displacement and cultural adjustment
Stigma in African Contexts Cultural attitudes toward mental illness & help-seeking
Youth Mental Health Academic pressure, social media, and adolescent wellbeing
Mental Health Policy Advocacy for community-based mental health systems in Africa

Dr. Olawande believes deeply that research must translate into real-world change. Her work is therefore not confined to academic journals — it informs her programmes, shapes her advocacy, and drives her public education efforts.

Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges

The Tomike Olawande Mental Health Initiative was established to bridge the gap between clinical mental health services and the communities that need them most. Through awareness talks, community workshops, online education, and media engagement, the Initiative reaches individuals, families, educators, and leaders across Nigeria, the UK, Europe, and the wider African diaspora.

Central to the Initiative's mission is the belief that mental health education should be accessible to everyone — regardless of literacy level, economic status, or cultural background. This commitment drives the development of culturally adapted resources, plain-language educational materials, and community-centred programming.

A World Where Every Mind Matters

Dr. Olawande's long-term vision is the establishment of a global mental health institute dedicated to research, training, and advocacy for underserved communities worldwide. This institute would serve as a hub for knowledge creation, professional development, and community empowerment — driving systemic change at local, national, and international levels.

In the immediate term, the Initiative aims to expand its reach across Sub-Saharan Africa and the diaspora, strengthen its digital platform, and build a network of trained mental health ambassadors and community advocates.
